As some of you know, I recently discovered a new product that completely won me over. If you’ve never tried using a foam roller, I highly recommend it.
In case you haven’t seen one before, a foam roller looks like a rolled up yoga mat. Mine is covered with specially-designed “bumps” to increase the massage effect. You are supposed to balance on top of the roller (similar to the position you take when using an exercise ball) while rolling back and forth across key muscles. I’ve been using mine while standing against the wall because this position helps me target the tender muscles in my upper back.
In the initial review of my new RumbleRoller, I made the statement that using a foam roller “is even better than most of the professional massages I’ve experienced” (at least when it comes to the actual massaging action –I still miss the instant relaxation that comes with the spa atmosphere). I’ve been using my foam roller consistently for a month now, and I stand by that original claim.
But it’s such a mystery to me why this particular area in my back is distinctly tender. Why does the rolling action feel so good? Why is the area sore afterward? Will my body be different once these tender spots are gone? I’ve heard the explanations about pressure points, trigger points, where we hold tension, etc. But I want to understand what’s going on from a physiological perspective… or from an emotional perspective?
Over at The Body Window, Elle provides an encyclopedia of information on the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of foam rolling. She even has video demonstrations of how to perform various foam roller exercises (scroll to the bottom). Elle’s website is a great place to start if you are new to foam rolling, like I am.
What is your experience with pressure points and other massage techniques? Do you think they could be helpful in cellulite recovery? Isn’t it wonderful that something so healthy feels so good?
Are you battling the blight solo? Cellulite investigating is much more fun (and effective) when you're not going at it alone. Come join the conversation in our discussion forum.![]()

Thanks, Elle! I learned so much by reading through your site. I love how you combine the physical and emotional aspects of healing. And the foam roller demonstrations are so helpful!
So I’m wondering if you’ve ever gotten around to using the RR on cellulite? I’m Considering buying one both for massage and cellulite. But I want a cellulite-use update!
I’ve been using a rolling pin for cellulite and the Rumble Roller for my back. The rolling pin is smaller and easy to use on the legs while standing because of the handles. I’m on the road now, but I’ll try the RR on the legs next week and give you an update.
