**Bottoms Up! by Joyce Vedral, Ph.D. is the first selection for our Cellulite Book-of-the-Month research group. We'd love to have you read along with us (several Amazon affiliates sell the book for under $4 including shipping
) or simply post your comments or questions below.
Who is Joyce Vedral?
Published in 1993, Bottoms Up! is your classic anti-cellulite text. But Vedral is NOT your classic bodybuilding gym rat. She's one of us. In her earlier career, she was a college professor. Her Ph.D. is in English literature. Most days, she works out at home.
The photo on page 11 shows her at age 24, a typical woman, 115 lbs --not overweight but not fit, either. Next to that photo is one of Joyce at age 49, just as she appears on the cover of her book. And that was over fifteen years ago. Joyce must be in her mid sixties by now, but judging from the cover of her latest workout dvd, The Cougar Workout released in 2009, she looks younger than ever (granted, the hair is a contributing factor). How does she do it?
According to her bio, Joyce packed on the pounds over the years until she was embarrassed to stand in front of her class. She tried the usual diets and workout trends, but didn't see real success until she started consulting with bodybuilders, reinventing their techniques for "real" women like herself.
Joyce went on to become a popular authority on weight training for women. She created her own line of workout programs and is a New York Times bestselling author. One of those bestselling books is Bottoms Up!.
What's Her Take on Cellulite?
Myth: Cellulite is genetic --you can't get rid of it.
Fact: Cellulite is stubborn, bunched-up fat --it will gradually disappear as you follow the Bottoms Up! plan!
She claims she's also watched hundreds of other women get rid of their cellulite, too, from ages eighteen to sixty and above. The before and after photographs on her website incline me to believe her.
In Bottoms Up!, Joyce goes on to explain her philosophy on cellulite. "While it's true that some people are more genetically inclined to cellulite than others, everyone can get rid of it --and this means you." I agree with Joyce on this one. We tend to use the genetic factor as an excuse, as if an omnipotent power pre-ordained "Thou shalt forever live with cellulite." I know God allows famines and wars and such, but solutions exist for those tragedies (hypothetically, at least). There must be a solution for cellulite, too, don't you think? Would God really be THAT cruel??
What to expect from the Bottoms Up! plan:
If you're less than thirty pounds overweight, she predicts you will see cellulite-free thighs, hips, buttocks, and stomach in twenty-four workout hours (if you do the math for the basic plan, that's 18 weeks). If you are more overweight than that, you should see the same results in six months to a year no matter how out of shape you are. Could such bold predictions be valid? What do you think?
Next week we'll focus on the workout portion of the Bottoms Up! plan. Thanks for joining in! We need all the investigative firepower we can muster for this case.

Can't believe she is 65! I like the idea of getting workout advice from a woman like Joyce. She must be doing something right! And I really like that she works out at home.
Yes, Joyce inspires me, too. I will post a video of her soon so you can get a feel for her energy. She seems like she's a lot of fun to be around. Thanks for commenting!
