Ask the Guru: How Can I Start an Anti-Cellulite Exercise Routine that Lasts?

by Melissa on January 14, 2010

I really want to tackle my cellulite this year and I know exercise is an important part of making that happen.  The only problem is, I absolutely dread going to the gym! I can’t stand treadmills and that kind of thing. When I try to exercise at home, I have trouble being consistent with so many distractions around. I know if I force myself to exercise, I will feel better about myself afterward. How can I motivate myself to start a lasting exercise routine?

**********

Dear Cellulite Investigation Readers,

When dealing with matters of fat, whether cellulite or the overweight kind, people often say “why don’t you just get up and go for a run.”  But there’s a big gap between exercise and motivation.

Forcing yourself to exercise is very detrimental. If you force yourself, you have this battle in your mind –in your internal dialogue.  It’s very stressful when you argue with yourself. When you force yourself to do things, you produce adrenaline fluid. It’s a real thing! It gets stuck in your system, you get headaches, and you don’t burn it off. It’s just another toxin in your cellulite. Plus, if you exercise before your body is ready, you are more prone to injury.

So I suggest, just relax. I would rather a client sit on the couch and take ten deep breaths instead of forcing herself to exercise. If you clean your blood and start bringing more nutrients into your system, movement will come. You’ll find yourself just being able to do more. Movement will come because you have more energy. Your brain will be clearer and you will start making better choices because you’re more positive.

If you wait until the desire to move comes, you are keeping in line with what you’re body wants to do. If you do it before then, you are pushing it. For me, watching the Biggest Loser is like watching a horror movie. They get some good results, but I cry for those people. So just wait. Start eating well, and you will want to move. That’s when you really enjoy the movement. That’s when you get the endorphin release with it, and you will feel really good about yourself.

Holly, so nice to hear from you! I am a new blogger and I must need some work on my button placement (among maaaaany other things). There is an orange link to subscribe in an RSS feed in the right column, under the link to the Facebook fan page. There's also a subscribe button at the top of the page, although I must admit I'm not sure how they work. The whole subscriber thing is something I have yet to figure out :(

I was excited to read your recent posts about health and nutrition, subjects that are near and dear to my heart!

I was looking for a GFC button lol but became a facebook fan instead. Interesting comment about changing the foods you eat…that's a bigger problem for me than going to the gym!

A lot of women would agree with you on that one, Becca! I think the key to changing your diet is to take small steps and have fun with it. And if you've read along here at CI, you know I'm NOT talking about calorie restriction or a low-fat eating plan. For me, it's all about eating traditional, nutrient-dense, Real Food! That means lots of organic produce, pastured meats and dairy, grass-fed butter and cheeses, mineral-rich stocks…

Thanks for the Facebook add! I will have to look into getting a GFC button so I'm not the girl who shows up at the Friday Follow party without the requisite button. (AWKward!)

How fun! At first I thought this was a spam comment. I think it was the use of cellulite, lol. But I'm pleasantly surprised! THanks for finding and following me…now I can do the same! And…learn something!

Have a great day!

Hi! I just stopped by from SITs. Love this lady's answer. Of course, if I didn't force myself to work out, I'd NEVER work out. I eat healthy foods, but I don't always have the energy to go work out.

That's a good point, Tami. I think Bron was writing more to women who can't even find the energy to force themselves to work out. We've all been there at one point or another. Thanks for stopping by!
